University of Wisconsin- Madison Alzheimer Physician

 The University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health Department of Neurology has an opening for a tenure-track position in Alzheimer's disease research. The successful candidate will join a vibrant nationally known program in Alzheimer's disease building on the resources of the Wisconsin Alzheimer's Institute (WAI) and the NIH-funded Wisconsin Alzheimer's Disease Research Center (ADRC). The faculty member will collaborate within a multi-departmental program that includes faculty in neurology neuropsychology geriatrics the WAI and the ADRC. Additional research collaborations involve the UW Health Innovations Program the Institute for Clinical and Translational Research, multiple departments and schools across campus.


The pre-eminent Alzheimer's disease research at UW Madison focuses on pre-clinical identification of risk factors and biomarkers based on two diverse longitudinal cohorts enrolling a total of approximately 1800 middle-aged adults with follow-up for over 15 years (WAI WRAP and ADRC IMPACT). Data include CSF imaging and cognitive biomarkers. Ancillary studies with collaborators are exploring metabolomics genomics vascular risk factors microbiome genetics and exercise and their relationships with Alzheimer's disease and related dementias. Emerging research areas include health disparities clinical care community-based care and health services building on an outstanding array of resources in Milwaukee and Madison Wisconsin and across the state.


Health disparity programs are based out of the WAI Milwaukee Regional Office which provides culturally appropriate services for adults with Alzheimer's and their families hosting workshops and screenings to promote prevention while simultaneously recruiting individuals from communities of or for the WRAP and other research studies. Other resources are available through the ADRC which has extensive outreach programs to the African American communities in Dane County. Both the WAI and the ADRC work with Wisconsin's tribes. Resources for clinical and health services research include WAI's Dementia Diagnostic Clinic Network a network of 32 dementia diagnostic clinics across Wisconsin. Through these clinics, approximately 2000 patients with cognitive complaints are assessed annually using standardized protocols. Clinics lect de-identified data on each patient visit providing a rich resource from which to launch health services and clinical research related to Alzheimer's disease. Resources and opportunities for collaboration also exist with other health services programs housed at ADRC and the Institute for Clinical and Translational Research. Research in community-based care is facilitated by the recent establishment of the Wisconsin Dementia Resource Network run through WAI.


The Wisconsin Dementia Resource Network connects providers of community-based dementia care services across the state including the Alzheimer's Association chapters state-funded dementia care specialists and members of community and county-level dementia coalitions. This network provides an extraordinary resource from which to recruit for clinical trials or conduct research in community-based programs including in caregiver support early memory loss and more. Multiple opportunities for collaboration exist through a number of community-academic networks throughout campus.

The faculty should be a neurologist with training and expertise in an area of Alzheimer's disease research. He/she is expected to build on the resources available within WAI and also across campus. Areas of focus in Alzheimer's disease research may include but are not limited to vascular disease health disparities clinical care health services research and community-based programming. Clinical activities will involve attending duties one day per week in outpatient Alzheimer's clinics at the UW Health clinics Veterans Memorial Hospital or other locations. Teaching responsibilities include teaching medical student courses and clerkship mentoring graduate students and trainees training residents fellows and medical students and teaching continuing education programs for physicians neuropsychologists and the public. Degree and area of specialization:

An MD MD/PhD or DO degree board certification or eligibility in neurology and Alzheimer's disease fellowship training or equivalent experience is required. The successful candidate will be hired at the assistant associate or full professor level depending on experience. Candidates for associate or full professor rank must meet criteria for appointment at rank per UW School of Medicine and Public Health guidelines for appointment and promotion on the tenure track. Substantial additional resources may be available for a candidate with a high level of excellence seeking to join UW's Alzheimer's disease research programs.


License or Certificate:

Candidates must be certified or eligible for certification by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology and have completed Alzheimer's disease or equivalent fellowship training or comparable professional experience. Candidates must hold or be eligible to hold a Wisconsin Medical License.

Clinical activities will involve attending duties one day per week in outpatient Alzheimer's clinics at the UW Health clinics the William S. Middleton Memorial Veterans Hospital or other locations. Research responsibilities include developing an independent extramurally funded research program. Teaching responsibilities include teaching medical student courses and clerkship mentoring graduate students and trainees training residents fellows and medical students and/or teaching continuing education programs for physicians neuropsychologists and the public.
