Tier 2 Canada Research Chair in Childhood Health Promotion

The Department of Psychology at the University of Calgary, in conjunction with the Alberta Children’s Hospital Research Institute, invites applications for a Tier 2 Canada Research Chair in Childhood Health Promotion. The successful candidate will be appointed at the rank of Assistant Professor (Tenure-track) in the Department of Psychology. The anticipated start date is September 1, 2019.

The Department of Psychology is a research-intensive department with high standards in teaching. The department is seeking applications from individuals with a PhD in applied developmental or pediatric (clinical) psychology with a research focus on psychological and behavioural approaches to health promotion and disease prevention in childhood, emphasizing wellness and resilience. Applicants should have an established research focus in childhood health promotion, including topics such as (but not limited to) interventions to: foster physical activity, reduce the risk of illicit drug use or mental health problems, promote good sleep and dietary habits, or enhance psychological resilience.

Selection criteria for this position will include research excellence and originality, demonstrated effectiveness in teaching and supervision, and demonstrated ability (or strong potential) to secure competitive external funding. These criteria will be judged on a variety of metrics including, but not limited to, quantity and quality of research contributions to date; teaching dossier with ratings or other indications of quality; awards, scholarships, and other recognitions for research and teaching excellence; and record of competitive funding, including competitive studentships and fellowships. Impact will be evaluated based on a variety of metrics including mobilization of knowledge to a broad range of groups, leadership, and service roles.

Tier II Chairs are intended for exceptional emerging scholars (i.e., candidates must have been an active researcher in their field for fewer than 10 years at the time of nomination). Applicants who are more than 10 years from having earned their highest degree (and where career breaks exist, such as maternity, parental, or extended sick leave, clinical training, etc.) may have their eligibility for a Tier II Chair assessed through the program’s Tier II justification process. The successful candidate is expected to establish and maintain an active research program, and to contribute to the Department’s teaching and research supervision in both its undergraduate and graduate programs. In addition, some administrative service to the department, faculty, or university is expected.
