The Department of Psychology at The University of Texas of the Permian Basin is pleased to announce the opening for a tenure-track Psychology faculty position at the Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor level beginning August 2019. Presently the Department of Psychology offers the MA in Psychology with clinical and experimental concentrations. The future goal is to collaborate with our colleagues in the Department of Kinesiology and offer a PhD in Experimental Psychology with concentrations in sport, exercise, and performance psychology and social-cognitive psychology. Construction on the state-of-the-art D. Kirk Edwards Family Human Performance Center has begun and will include laboratory and office space for members the psychology department. In addition, a Center for Human Performance, Physiology, and Psychological Science has been established to enhance research and grant productivity. Ultimately, the kinesiology and psychology departments could merge as one.


The finalist for this position may be able to seek a STARS grant through the University of Texas system. The grant will provide startup funding of up to $250,000 at the assistant professor level and up to $500,000 at the associate professor level.


The ideal candidate for the position will hold a PhD in Health Psychology, Sport Psychology, or a closely related field and be able to collaborate with colleagues in an interdisciplinary research center devoted to human performance, physiology, and psychological science. The position requires teaching undergraduate courses as well as graduate courses in research methods, statistics, and in the candidate’s area of expertise. The candidate should also possess a willingness to teach online. In addition to teaching, faculty members are required to develop productive scholarly agendas, seek funding, and provide departmental, college, and university service.


UT Permian Basin is located in the warm and sunny climate of West Texas. The Midland/Odessa area is ideal for those who enjoy hiking, geology, and the outdoors. Several Texas state parks are located within 200 miles of the university. The department presently has 6 full-time faculty, with over 400 undergraduate majors, and, as noted above is planning to expand the existing graduate program with the Center and the PhD program.
