Research Faculty

The Social & Decision Analytics Division (SDAD) is seeking applications for research faculty positions in statistics and social and behavioral sciences. SDAD is a leading research division of the Biocomplexity Institute & Initiative (BII) at the University of Virginia. BII performs world-class informatics research in life sciences, social sciences, and human health by integrating theory, modeling and simulation with computational and experimental science in a transdisciplinary, team science research environment.

SDAD combines expertise in statistics and social and behavioral sciences to develop evidence-based research and quantitative methods to inform policy decision-making and evaluation. The researchers at SDAD span many disciplines including statistics, economics, computational social science, psychology, political science, policy, and program evaluation, and data science. SDAD methods integrate statistical learning, network science, cognitive science, behavioral economics, game theory, crowdsourcing, and machine learning.

SDAD researchers address complex social problems by leveraging the diversity of data flows available today including administrative and government records, surveys, social media, and sensors. Through team collaboration, the research faculty candidate is expected to demonstrate the capacity to discover, repurpose and redirect these data flows to solve critical social problems. Computational complexity is at the heart of SDAD research. SDAD leverages all the research capabilities of BII, along with the research high performance computing infrastructure housed in UVA’s Advanced Research Computing center.

This is an open rank posting for research faculty (assistant, associate and full) positions and will require a PhD with relevant professional experience and appropriate credentials befitting the professorial ranks. 

Responsibilities: (for all ranks unless otherwise specified)

  • Contributes to the development and implementation of social, behavioral, and decision analytics with a special emphasis on statistics, data science, and measurement methods
  • Participates in (journey level ranks) and leads (advanced and senior level ranks) applied case studies
  • Develops statistical, social and behavioral sciences methods for and approaches to the analysis of complex systems
  • Advises and coaches project team on challenging statistical and quantitative social science design, analysis and decision-making issues (for advanced and senior level ranks)
  • Provides expert opinions, performs modeling and analyses, and leverages external experts to provide help on projects (for senior level ranks)
  • Provides guidance to research students, team scientists and sponsors on relevance and interpretation of analyses (for advanced and senior level ranks)
  • Provides leadership and guidance as the statistical and/or quantitative social science expert on a project team, with general direction from the PI (for senior level ranks)
  • Accountable for all statistical and/or quantitative social and behavioral science aspects of the project studies and submissions, including quality, relevance and scientific validity (for advanced and senior level ranks)
  • Mentors undergraduate, graduate students and post docs in the SDAD (for advanced and senior level ranks)
  • Leads (for senior level ranks) and collaborates in (for all ranks) publication of scientific results in peer reviewed journals, professional conferences and other forums
  • Engages in collaborative work with peers both within the group and outside with the aim to achieve the above objectives
  • Becomes familiar and actively participates in BII research activities, which may not be directly her/his own, and may reside in other BII research divisions
  • Routinely communicates research progress with supervisor, peers and other appropriate staff
  • Takes the initiative in finding solutions to scientific problems that arise in day-to-day research
  • Leads (for advanced and senior level ranks) or participates (for all ranks) in grant writing initiatives

Qualifications: (for all ranks unless otherwise specified)

  • PhD in statistics, statistics, social and behavioral sciences, digital humanities or in a very closely related field
  • Credentials equivalent at assistant, associate, and full professor (required for senior level ranks)
  • Ability to excel in a highly collaborative team science environment
  • Experience with advanced approaches to statistics and data-driven model development
  • Experience with statistical software systems such as R, programming, and databases
  • Demonstrated strong computational, analytical, academic writing and public speaking skills (required for senior and advanced level ranks)
  • Experience in developing publications based on individual research and evidence of publications in peer-reviewed journals
  • Dependent on experience and seniority level, must possess appropriate level of independence, high motivation, good communication skills, strong work ethic, and ability to work individually as well as within high-performing and diverse team structures

Preferences: (for any rank unless otherwise specified)

  • Experience in social computing and decision analysis, analysis of algorithms, simulations, large databases, complex networks, and probabilistic methods of analyzing combinatorial studies (required for advanced and senior level ranks)
  • Experience with using many sources of data, both traditional ones such as surveys, and unstructured ones, such as images, sensors, and social media
  • Experience working with federal, state, and local government entities (required for senior and advanced level ranks)
  • Experience in the use and development of measurement instruments
