WellStar’s leaders of the Department of Psychology and Rehabilitation Medicine are pleased to announce an opening for a Rehabilitation Psychologist. As an integral member of the Rehabilitation Team, the Rehabilitation Psychologist will provide short- and long-term psychological services, including assessments, interventions, consultations, and support to patients and families impacted by congenital or acquired disabilities.
The Rehabilitation Treatment Team is comprised of a multi-disciplinary group of rehabilitation professionals working to assist patients impacted by disabilities, by removing barriers and facilitating progress to optimize quality of life. The Rehabilitation Psychologist’s role on the team is to employ psychological tools (the clinical interview and/or objective measurements) to entify emotional and behavioral factors that could compromise optimal recovery, and to educate the patient and the family about the potential impact of their injuries on daily functioning and emotional wellbeing. The Rehabilitation Psychologist applies psychological skills to empower patients to actively participate in their recovery. They also make recommendations to assist the treatment team, patient and family in meeting treatment objectives.
WellStar Health System is an 11-hospital system, recognized as the 5th most integrated health system in the United States, and is the largest health system in Georgia. WellStar is a member of the Mayo Clinic Network. This opening is a position representing collaboration between WellStar Psychological Services and Rehabilitation Medicine. Operational support for this position will originate within the Psychological Services practice, but with strong lines to the Rehabilitation Medicine Director. Services will be provided on-site at the Kennestone Regional Medical Center in the Inpatient Rehabilitation Unit (IRU), as well as the outpatient neurorehabilitation program. Both inpatient and outpatient services are located on the WellStar Kennestone Hospital campus in Marietta, Georgia. WellStar Kennestone Hospital is a level 2 trauma center and a comprehensive stroke center.
The candidate we are seeking will engage in a broad range of activities including the provision of neuropsychological and cognitive screening, individual and family consultation, psychotherapy, group therapy, and psycho-education. Prior experiences related to motivational interviewing, increasing treatment adherence, neuropsychology, rehabilitation, pain management, behavioral sleep medicine, and sexual dysfunction are relevant to working effectively with our population. To that point, we are seeking a psychologist who understands the complexities of our patients and possesses a strong conceptual framework regarding the psychology of adjustment, and the ways in which traumatic and acquired injuries impact various components of the whole person and family systems. In addition to direct clinical care responsibilities, the Rehabilitation Psychologist will provide support to other team members as needed and work strategically with the Medical Director for Rehabilitation Services to meet existing needs of our patients and their families.
The Rehabilitation Psychologist should be effective in building legial relationships with physicians, working laboratively to help manage patients with chronic and complex illnesses. The Rehabilitation Psychologist should possess interpersonal assertiveness and a team-orientation. The Rehabilitation Psychologist should be equipped to manage complex family and team dynamics, integrate multiple sources of data, and respond calmly during crisis situations. The ability to expediently entify and leverage psychological motivations to mobilize treatment progress is necessary. He/She should be equipped to provide leadership in the outpatient rehabilitation program.
The Psychologist should possess expertise related to evidence-based psychological treatments, such as Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (ACT). He/She should be adept in the application of techniques like motivational interviewing, and may utilize biofeedback and other approaches for segments of the population. Knowledge of brain-body relationships and experience with neuropsychological testing is necessary to fulfill this role. In addition, the provider should possess an understanding of various neurological conditions (including acquired brain injury, traumatic brain injury, etc.), have a familiarity with medical nomenclature, and be able to stratify higher- vs lower-level problem areas, entify appropriate candidates for an inpatient Rehabilitation setting, and work effectively with patients and families throughout the continuum of care.
Required Minimum Education:
- A doctorate degree (PhD/PsyD) in clinical or counseling psychology from a program accredited by the American Psychological Association (APA)
- Completion of an APA-accredited internship in a hospital/medical setting
- 1 to 3 years of experience working as a Rehabilitation Psychologist is preferred
- Licensure or license-eligibility as a Psychologist in the State of Georgia
To criteria 3 above, one of those years may include the residency (or internship) year, provided that clinical supervision was provided by a Rehabilitation Psychologist holding ABRP certification. Whereas active board-certification in Rehabilitation Psychology (ABRP) is not required at the time of hire, the provider should take steps to obtain the ABCN within 24 months of the date of hire.
