Psychologist- Department of Preventive Medicine & Community Health (NASA Johnson Space Center, Houston, TX)

Specific Job-Related Duties

  • Lead development and implementation of the behavioral health services provisions of the TREAT Act with Astronauts who have left active duty with the Astronaut Corps
  • Provide a full range of comprehensive psychological assessment services to include cognitive and psychological testing, and diagnostic interviews at periodic intervals over the lifespan of a former astronaut receiving medical services at the NASA Johnson Space Center.
  • Provide evidence-based behavioral health interventions for former astronauts at JSC Clinic within the limits of time, funding, and clinical capabilities
  • Provide care coordination for former astronauts requiring behavioral health services who are unable to receive care in the JSC Clinic
  • Provide case-centered consultation to aerospace medicine professional staff within the JSC Clinic and to community providers concerning clinical assessment findings ad appropriate treatment plans for former astronauts
  • Develop and sustain subject matter expertise in epidemiological studies on the prevalence of cognitive and behavioral health problems associated with again in the general population and in other samples of similar, occupational relevance to astronauts (e.g. military personnel)
  • Develop and document evidence for spaceflight associated behavioral health conditions, in coordination with the LSAH epidemiologists
  • Develop, refine, and implement measures and methods for capturing relevant behavioral health data for monitoring and decision-making
  • Design and implement Electronic Medical Record forms for documenting and tracking relevant data and outcomes
  • Provide behavioral health case level decision support services to administrative review boards
  • Provide recommendations to NASA psychologists and psychiatrist for applying findings to current and future BHP assessments and other work with active duty astronauts, dependents, and key mission personnel; and serve as a clinical case consultant to the Employee Assistance Program staff
  • Collaborate with and advise internal NASA and external (including ISS international partners) research and operations groups and professionals to share information on occupational health challenges for spaceflight


Preferred Skill/Competency

  • Advanced competencies in psychological assessment, psychodiagnostics and cognitive/neuropsychological assessment
  • Advanced competencies in providing a range of effective psychological treatments for clinical conditions typically encountered in a primary care setting
  • Proven skills in using research methods and literature to inform the clinical practice of behavioral healthcare
  • Proven ability to successfully evaluate and treat high-performing individuals such as those in high-risk jobs
  • Proven skills in research methods to include research design and analyzing and interpreting data
  • Proven ability to communicate effectively with varied audiences (e.g., various levels of management, scientists, medical professionals and non-medical professionals)
  • Demonstrated interpersonal effectiveness and professionalism in working with others in a collaborative, multidisciplinary, team-oriented environment
  • Ability to be flexible and adapt quickly to changing requirements


Preferred Work Experience

  • Prior experience providing behavioral health services in a primary care setting, occupational health clinic, or to individuals in operational or mission-driven settings (e.g., military, aviation, spaceflight)
  • Experience in the selection and training of operational personnel and small teams
  • Prior experience in developing behavioral health services or programs in health care or operational organizations
  • Advanced clinical training (e.g., post-doctoral fellowship) in Neuropsychology, Behavioral Medicine, or similar area
