Professor and Head, Human Development and Family Studies

Purdue University is seeking nominations and applications for Head, Department of Human Development and Family Studies (HDFS). The Head will provide leadership and vision, and will facilitate departmental research, scholarship, and educational activities. In addition, the Head is responsible for fiscal management of the department, personnel issues, faculty/staff development, alumni relations, and advocacy for the Department to the College, University, and larger community.

The Department of HDFS is home to the Center for Families, the Center for Early Learning, and the Military Family Research Institute. The Ben & Maxine Miller Child Development Laboratory School, accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children, is affiliated with the department. HDFS faculty are involved in a wide range of cross-campus initiatives, including Advanced Methods at Purdue, the Center for Aging and the Life Course, the Purdue Autism Research Center, and the Purdue Policy Research Institute. A particularly strong relationship exists with the new Department of Public Health, where several faculty members are faculty associates with key roles in the Master’s in Public Health program.

The Department of HDFS is a highly productive, diverse, and collegial department with 24 full-time tenure/clinical track faculty (https://www.purdue.edu/hhs/hdfs/). The department awards Bachelors and Ph.D. degrees and currently has approximately 270 undergraduate majors and 25 graduate students.

We are looking for an academic leader and scholar with a strong commitment to the discovery, learning, teaching, and engagement missions of the department. Applicants should have scholarly credentials commensurate with the rank of Tenured Full Professor, including a Ph.D. in a relevant field. Field of specialization is open. Desirable attributes include a strong record of published research and external funding, prior experience in academic administration and graduate education, and a commitment to the development and advancement of individual faculty, staff, and students, as well as the department as a whole. The successful candidate will be someone with excellent communication skills who values and promotes diversity and inclusion.

The College of Health and Human Sciences (HHS), home to the Department of HDFS, is the newest and 2nd largest college at Purdue with extensive interconnections within and beyond the College (http://www.purdue.edu/hhs/). The College brings together scholars in the health sciences and human sciences to strategically address issues vital to enhancing people’s health and quality of life. HHS’ multidisciplinary learning environment uniquely prepares students to contribute to improved human health and behavior and to serve as leaders in their disciplines. The College also provides a rich environment for world-changing research and discovery. Purdue’s land-grant mission facilitates the translation of these discoveries from theory to application, benefiting not only those in Indiana but society as a whole.

Established in 1869, Purdue is Indiana’s land-grant university, a comprehensive educational and research institution that is a member of the American Association of Universities (AAU). Purdue ranks fifth among public institutions in the United States. Purdue’s strengths in Engineering, Agriculture, Science, Veterinary Medicine, Pharmacy, Liberal Arts, Management, and the Health and Human Sciences contribute to a robust research and educational environment. The West Lafayette Campus, located one hour north of Indianapolis and two hours south of downtown Chicago, has ten academic colleges with an enrollment of 44,500 students. The diverse, greater Lafayette/West Lafayette communities number approximately 200,000 and boast a low cost of living with some of the best schools in the country (http://www.homeofpurdue.com/).

Nominations and applications will be accepted until the position is filled. For best consideration, applications should be received by November 1, 2019 and include a letter of interest indicating relevant experience and qualifications, a statement of leadership philosophy, and full curriculum vitae. Applications should be submitted at https://career8.successfactors.com/sfcareer/jobreqcareer?jobId=7384&company=purdueuniv&username.

Nominations and questions regarding the position should be submitted to Ms. Stephanie Ferguson, Executive Recruiter Purdue University Human Resources, at fergus52@purdue.edu.

Purdue University's Department of Human Development and Family Studies is committed to advancing diversity in all areas of faculty effort, including scholarship, instruction, and engagement. Candidates should address at least one of these areas in their cover letter, indicating their past experiences, current interests or activities, and/or future goals to promote a climate that values diversity and inclusion.
