Principal Scientist

The Center of Addiction and Prevention Research (CAPR) at the University of Virginia (UVA) seeks a Senior Professional Research Staff as a Principal Scientist to join our clinical translational research team in the Military Population Health Program.  This position presents a successful candidate the opportunity to work with world-renowned researchers in health promotion and disease prevention.  The Principal Scientist will act as a senior project manager for the military research program and have leadership responsibility for existing and new research projects. 


Based in the Department of Public Health Sciences, in the School of Medicine, CAPR’s Military Population Health Program is headed by Director Dr. Wayne Talcott and have created innovative and effective interventions around tobacco control and alcohol abuse, obesity, and cancer prevention and control initiatives for military populations.  In addition to a 25-year relationship with the United States Air Force, CAPR has collaborated with civilian cancer centers, youth organizations, and health and community centers across the country to work with diverse, at-risk populations. 


The Principal Scientist will be based in San Antonio, Texas, and report directly to Dr. Talcott.  The successful candidate will be appointed for an initial term of three years.  After three years, annual reappointments will be possible based on performance and the continuing availability of funds.  


Candidates must have a PhD in Social Work or Psychology.  The successful candidate will have outstanding written and oral communication skills, excellent interpersonal skills, a clear track record of serving in leadership positions, the ability to work independently and with diverse groups, a strong track record in cooperative work and evidence of an ability to lead teams and solve complicated problems.  Furthermore, the successful candidate will have proven expertise in understanding the military culture and have experience in policy and clinical interventions designed for a military population.  In addition, the successful candidate is expected to be creative, independent, and highly motivated, with the ability to interact professionally in both research and military environments.  Experience in conducting tobacco, alcohol abuse, obesity, and opioid interventions is also preferred.
