Setting and Facilities

Humboldt State University is located on the northern California redwood coast, in the community of Arcata (pop. 18,000). The hillside campus overlooks Humboldt Bay and the Pacific Ocean, amidst the surrounding Redwood forest. As one of the smaller campuses of the California State University system, with about 8,500 students, HSU is known for its open and friendly campus environment. HSU has a national reputation for academic excellence, especially in the sciences. CAPS is housed in the Health & Counseling building on campus. Each resident will have a private office, with computer and internet access, and a video camera for supervision. The counseling facility includes a group room, staff common area and kitchen. CAPS consists of twelve professional therapists working as a team. Peer consultation is emphasized and constantly utilized in a supportive and collegial atmosphere. The staff is especially interested in residents who will support this type of work environment. Residents will engage in both formal and informal supervisory contact with all professional staff. In addition to supervision, residents will participate in our weekly case conference, staff meeting, group supervision of groups, and training seminar. Professionals at CAPS represent a range of theoretical orientations.
