Open-rank Faculty Search: Educational Equity and Opportunity

The Harvard Graduate School of Education (HGSE) invites applications from scholars who focus on educational opportunity and equity. This full-time faculty position will be at the rank of Assistant, Associate (untenured), or Professor of Education, depending upon experience.

We are particularly interested in scholars who employ qualitative research methods, though we also invite applications from scholars who use quantitative and/or mixed methodologies. Strong applicants will be distinguished by the quality of their research and the extent to which they engage in applying their work to policy and practice.

We undertake this search in light of the shifting demographics in the United States, persistent and significant ethnic and racial disparities across multiple indicators of student achievement and well-being, and HGSE’s institutional commitment to educational equity. We seek candidates who have strong training in education and related social science disciplines and whose scholarship focuses on educational equity and/or policies, programs, or practices, from pre-K to postsecondary education. Scholars who focus on race/ethnicity, immigration, gender, and/or class, and who study the role of education in promoting or inhibiting social mobility are especially of interest.

Specific areas of interest include but are not limited to:
• the role of social contexts (e.g., family, school, neighborhood, peers) and social policies on achievement and other educational outcomes for academically vulnerable populations;
• the role of identity development in educational experiences and outcomes;
• educational and organizational policies and practices that foster equitable and inclusive learning environments;
• policies and practices for supporting academically vulnerable child and youth populations and their families (e.g., immigrant students, students from linguistically diverse backgrounds, students with disabilities; students growing up in poverty);
• anti-racist and anti-discriminatory educational policies and practices.

We seek candidates who have the potential to make a powerful contribution to the core curriculum for our master’s and doctoral programs by teaching required courses and recommended elective courses as part of specific program pathways. We are especially interested in a scholar who can successfully teach qualitative methods to our graduate students, many of whom are interested in educational policy and practice, broadly construed. The ability to convey conceptual as well as practical knowledge beyond one’s own specific expertise is crucial. High-quality teaching is highly valued at HGSE, and the school has made a strong commitment to cultivating and supporting strong teaching practices among faculty, primarily through the work of the school’s Teaching and Learning Lab.

We seek candidates who have an excellent record of rigorous scholarship and a commitment to teaching and mentoring. HGSE faculty at all ranks advise students and participate in institutional governance and service. Candidates should have an earned doctorate in a relevant field prior to appointment.

The search committee will begin reviewing applications on October 15, 2019 and will continue until the position is filled. The search may result in the hiring of multiple faculty members.
