Open Rank Faculty Position

The Department of Human Development and Quantitative Methodology (HDQM) in the College of Education at the University of Maryland, College Park, is seeking applications for a full-time, tenure-track (Open Rank), faculty position in Human Development with expertise in Early Childhood Education to start August 2020. Qualified candidates will have a focus in both research and teaching on very young children (birth to age three). Candidates should have demonstrated interest in working at the interface of research and practice in early education intervention with high risk communities. The Human Development program at UMD has two specialization areas, Educational Psychology and Developmental Science, both of which are ranked in the top 10 nationally. The department houses an innovative undergraduate teacher education program leading to dual certification in Early Childhood Education and Early Childhood Special Education (EC/ECSE), with a special focus on children from high-risk communities. The Center for Early Childhood Education and Intervention (CECEI) provides opportunities to engage in research and evaluation activities at the local, state, and national levels.

Qualifications include an earned doctorate in early childhood education, developmental psychology, human development, educational psychology, or related fields. Candidates should demonstrate excellent training and background in their research area; evidence of impactful scholarly research and, in the case of associate or full professor candidates, evidence of an established research program that has received external funding. Candidates should also demonstrate evidence of effective teaching at the undergraduate and graduate level, experience working in early education or intervention settings, and interest in collaborative research within and across traditional disciplinary boundaries.

The successful candidate will be expected to: (1) develop or enhance a program of research in their area; (2) secure external grants and contracts to support their research; (3) teach primarily undergraduate ECE/ECSE courses, with some opportunities to teach at the graduate level); (4) advise master’s and doctoral students; (5) collaborate with school and community partners; and (6) provide service to the profession at the state, national, and international levels. Candidates with a demonstrated ability to incorporate diverse perspectives into teaching and scholarship as well as a commitment to working with students and groups from underrepresented backgrounds are preferred.

The EC/ECSE program has approximately 100 students (sophomores through seniors) who complete five semesters of field placements, in addition to standards-based coursework. The Human Development Program within HDQM has a current enrollment of about 50 students in its doctoral and master’s programs. The doctoral program consists of full time students interested in research and policy training. HDQM also contains a program in measurement, statistics, and evaluation.
