The Department of Human Development and Quantitative Methodology (HDQM) in the College of Education at the University of Maryland, College Park, is seeking applications for a full-time, tenure-track faculty position in Human Development at the Assistant/Associate level, to start August 2020. The Human Development program at UMD has two specialization areas, Developmental Science and Educational Psychology, both of which are ranked in the top 5 nationally. The search is open to any area within language development, broadly defined. This includes, but is not limited to: language acquisition; the role of the environment in language development; the role of language in social, emotional, and/or cognitive development; and the role of language development in academic achievement.

Qualifications include an earned doctorate in human development, developmental psychology, educational psychology, neuroscience, cognitive psychology, or related fields. Candidates should demonstrate strong training and background in their research area; evidence of high quality scholarly research and (in the case of associate professor candidates) evidence of an established research program that has received external funding; interest in collaborative research within and across traditional disciplinary boundaries at Maryland, and proficiency in teaching at the graduate and undergraduate level.

The successful candidate will be expected to: (1) maintain an active research program in language development; (2) secure external grants and contracts to support the applicant’s research; (3) teach at the graduate and undergraduate levels, including teaching courses in the recently-developed Human Development undergraduate major course sequence; (4) mentor master’s and doctoral students; (5) assist in the development of new programs and coursework; and (6) provide service to the profession at the state, national, and international levels. The Department is committed to increasing diversity within our

The Human Development Program within the HDQM department has a current enrollment of approximately 45 students in its doctoral and master’s programs. All doctoral students are full-time students who are strongly interested in research training and receive financial support through the duration of their program. In addition to the HD program, the Department of HDQM also includes an exceptionally strong program in measurement, statistics, and evaluation, from which doctoral students receive training in statistics and research methodology. There is also ample opportunity to collaborate with other communities and research centers on campus, including the developmental science community both within the department and at the campus level, the Language and Literacy Research Center, the Neuroscience and Cognitive Science Program, the Maryland Language Science Center, and the Maryland Neuroimaging Center.
