Open-Rank Position in Human Development and Family Studies (HDFS). The Department of Psychological, Health, & Learning Sciences (PHLS) at the University of Houston (UH) seeks scholars for a tenured or tenure-track faculty appointment at the academic rank of Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor. Priority areas of study for this position are in lifespan development, adult development, social and emotional development, health disparities, and families and parenting. This is an exciting time at UH given the university’s health initiative, the recent opening of a new Health and Biomedical Sciences Building, and our close proximity to the world-renowned Texas Medical Center. The department is rapidly expanding to make a collective impact on addressing health and educational disparities in our local, state, national, and international communities. The department is seeking outstanding candidates with a sustained record or potential of an externally-funded research program, excellence in teaching, and a clear commitment to enhancing the diversity of the faculty and student population.
Qualifications: Applicants for this position must hold a doctoral degree in human development and family studies, developmental psychology, or a closely-related discipline. A Certified Family Life Educator (CFLE) credential is preferred but not required. The successful candidate must demonstrate a record of innovative research published in high-impact peer-reviewed journals, a sustained record or potential of significant external funding, evidence of effective teaching ability, commitment to student success, and service to the profession and ability to lead within the HDFS program. The candidate’s qualifications must be commensurate with appointment as an Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor.
Responsibilities: Responsibilities include conducting innovative research and publishing in peer-reviewed journals; securing external funding to support an interdisciplinary program of research; rigorous teaching in predominately undergraduate courses; mentoring students; leadership within the HDFS program; chairing and serving on doctoral committees; community engagement; presenting research at professional meetings; and service to the Department, College, University, and profession. Those at the Associate or Full level will be responsible for mentoring junior faculty. HDFS is an undergraduate program; however, candidates may jointly affiliate with one of three PHLS doctoral programs (Counseling Psychology, School Psychology, and Measurement, Quantitative Methods, & Learning Sciences) to facilitate work with graduate students.
Appointment: This is a nine-month appointment. Review of candidates will begin immediately and will continue until the position is filled. The anticipated start date is September 1, 2020. Salary will be commensurate with the applicant’s qualifications and experience and will include benefits.
