Position Summary:
Utah State University (USU) is seeking an Executive Director for Student Health and Counseling Services. This newly created position is based on USU's Logan Campus and reports to the Associate Vice President for Student Affairs. As a central administrator, the Executive Director provides strategic direction for and day-to-day management of the Student Health and Wellness Center (Student Health) and Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS). The Executive Director will lead the implementation of a collaborative and integrated model of holistic wellness that addresses the needs of a diverse student population through services that address the physical and emotional healthcare needs of students. Candidates must have the skills to foster and maintain strong and productive professional relationships between Student Health and CAPS staff. The Executive Director also provides individual and group therapy, assessment, crisis intervention, outreach, consultation, clinical supervision, and training.


  • Serve as a visionary leader in the strategic planning, development, implementation, evaluation, and continual improvement of all Student Health and CAPS services
  • Provide consultation, mentorship, and administrative supervision and oversee the professional development, training, evaluation, and assignment of duties to Student Health and CAPS staff
  • Maintain a supportive office environment of professionalism, appreciation of diversity and individuality, healthy relationships, open communication, trust, and respect
  • Ensure compliance with federal and state laws, university policies and guidelines, professional ethical codes, and accreditation standards
  • Manage the operational budget and setting of priorities for optimal resource utilization
  • Review/approve expenses, staff leave, and professional development
  • Complete appropriate accreditation and other requested reports
  • Provide individual and group therapy, assessment, consultation, intake, and crisis interventions
  • Provide presentations, workshops, and consultations to faculty, staff, and students
  • Provide individual and group clinical supervision/training to doctoral-level trainees and undergraduate paraprofessionals
  • Continually increase knowledge and develop new skills that contribute to effective service
  • Serve on departmental, division, and university committees
  • Perform other related duties to advance the mission of USU and the Division of Student Affairs

CAPS supports students socially and emotionally in an environment of respect. Ten PhD licensed psychologists, graduate assistants, and several support personnel comprise the CAPS team. CAPS has been accredited since 1994 by the International Association of Counseling Services and delivers an APA accredited internship program. CAPS services include consultations, workshops, group therapy sessions, individual or couples counseling, and crisis interventions. CAPS provides presentations and training for the university community on student mental health topics and conducts psychoeducational assessments. Additional information about CAPS may be found at

Student Health & Wellness Center:

Student Health provides a comprehensive array of medical services including general medical and urgent care, psychiatry and mental health counseling, women's and men's health, physical exams, sports medicine, laboratory testing, X-rays, and onsite physical therapy. In addition, Student Health delivers educational opportunities on general health information & prevention, stress management, sexual health, healthy relationships, substance abuse & dependence, and minor in possession classes. The Student Health team includes a psychiatrist, a family physician, a physician assistant, a radiologist, two nurse practitioners, a drug and alcohol educator, a nutritionist, an administrative nurse, three licensed nurses, PhD Psychology graduate assistants, physical therapists and support staff. The USU Logan Campus is located in Logan, Utah, a mid-sized city situated in the beautiful Cache Valley of northern Utah. Logan is surrounded by the Wasatch Range of the Rocky Mountains and provides a spectacular setting with easy access to recreation including skiing, boating, fishing, hiking, camping, and sight-seeing. A variety of cultural opportunities are found in the community and at the university.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Doctoral degree in clinical, counseling, or combined psychology from an APA-accredited doctoral program, completion of an APA-accredited internship
  • Licensed as a psychologist. If not licensed in Utah, licensed in another state with the ability to be licensed in Utah within six (6) months of hire
  • Minimum of five years of experience providing psychological services in a university counseling center (UCC) or equivalent setting
  • Minimum of three years of experience as a Director or Associate, Assistant, Clinical, or Training Director in a UCC or equivalent setting
  • Experience working and collaborating with medical providers (psychiatrist, MD, nurse practitioner, etc.) in delivering mental health services
  • Excellent interpersonal, community, organizational, problem solving, and decision-making skills

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience providing clinical supervision
  • Skills, knowledge, and experience working with diverse students on a university campus
  • Background in and desire to conduct group therapy
  • Experience in providing psychoeducational workshops relevant to a university community
  • Experience with psychoeducational assessment, teaching and program development, and biofeedback
  • Effective oral and written communication skills
  • Background or knowledge with applicable regulations/guidelines, i.e. HIPPA, PHI
  • Experience working with an interdisciplinary treatment center that includes medical (psychiatrist, MD, nurse practitioner, etc.) and psychological (psychologists, other mental health service providers) services
