The Director of Sports Psychology is responsible for supporting the holistic development of UMass student-athletes, and will provide the education, resources, and opportunities that support learning essential life skills vital to student-athlete success at UMass and beyond. S/he works under the direction of the Senior Associate Athletic Director for Internal Operations with a clinical reporting line to the Director of Center for Counseling and Psychological Health.


Essential Functions:

  • Provide counseling services to individual student-athletes including evaluation, treatment planning, progress monitoring, re-evaluation and possible referral.

  • General range of clinical responsibilities

  • Provide evaluations, crisis interventions, brief psychotherapies of a wide range of patients (individuals and groups) within the Peak Performance department.

  • Provide consulting and outreach services to coaches, athletic trainers, and other administrative personnel regarding the psychological well-being of individual student-athletes and teams.

  • Engage in counseling-related activities including but not limited to maintaining counseling records, referrals, and managing various organizational and administrative aspects of counseling cases. Provide daytime, evening, and weekend crisis intervention and emergency services in situations involving individual student-athletes or teams with support from the Center for Counseling and Psychological Health.

  • Coordinate delivery of substance use education and treatment. Assist the academic support staff, as requested with LD/ADHD assessments.

  • Specialized tasks as defined with director.

  • Help athletes and teams enhance their performance and successfully manage with pressures of their sport, by teaching relaxation, coping skills, imagery, positive self-talk and other techniques, providing counseling, life skills planning, rehabilitation programs and more.

  • Assist student-athletes with the cognitive and emotional aspects of athletic performance, conflict resolution, motivation, recovery from injury, and team building. Assess athletic performance and/or psychological state.

  • Participate in orientation by introducing sport psychology and how to access these services. Identify psychological education outreach needs and offer relevant programming. Provide presentations for student-athletes, coaches, and Athletic Department staff members as requested by the director of aforementioned groups.

  • Understand and comply with state statues governing the ethical provision of psychological care, as well as those rules governing the NCAA and conferences that our teams compete in. Under the direction of Athletics and CCPH, develop and execute institutional policies and procedures.

  • Responsible for keeping abreast of current trends and developments in the field through publications, seminars, and conferences

  • Performs other functions as assigned.


Qualifications:

  • Ph.D., Psy.D. or Ed.D. in clinical or counseling psychology or a relevant field.

  • Licensure in Massachusetts for independent practice of psychology (psychologist and Health Service Provider).

  • Three to five years of demonstrated clinical experience, preferably working within an athletics setting.

  • Ability to understand and work with diverse communities and populations.

  • Ability to collaborate and be part of a larger system.

  • Ability to manage multiple and sometimes conflicting priorities.

  • Advanced oral and written communications skills.

  • Working knowledge of computers, electronic medical records software and student database systems.

  • Familiarity with HIPPA regulations.

  • Prior working knowledge of NCAA rules and regulations.

  • Ability to work evenings and weekends.

  • Ability to foster and maintain working relationships with various athletic, university, and public constituencies.

  • Association for Applied Sport Psychology Certification or in pursuit thereof preferred.
