Working as a Clinical Psychologist in New Zealand
Clinical Psychologist positions are usually full-time, 40 hours a week with some positions rostered for on-call, after-hours support. A typical Clinical Psychologist working for a CMH will see 5-6 clients per day with the remainder of the
day being spent writing reports and participating in meetings. Nearly all vacancies are within our public health care, no-fault liability system. Therefore, clinical psychologists are not required to carry malpractice insurance but do need to keep good records and review their cases on a weekly basis with a supervising psychologist.
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy is the primary mode of treatment with many of our CMHs open to other treatment methods. Teams often include a social worker, occupational therapist, psychiatric nurse as the line manager, psychiatrist for consultation-liaison and a professional advisor.
New Zealand is a small, accessible country which means that some practitioners may be required to travel to satellite CMH’s to see clients. New Zealand offers the opportunity to work with clients from a wide range of age groups and from a diverse background of ethnic cultures including Maori, Pasifika and others from Asia and further abroad.
