The position is located in the Federal Bureau of Prisons’ (BOP) Commitment and Treatment Program (CTP) at the Federal Correctional Complex, Butner, North Carolina. The CTP provides a full spectrum of psychological services and comprehensive therapeutic treatment for individuals who have been certified and/or civilly committed as sexually dangerous persons. The incumbent is responsible for providing comprehensive clinical psychological services and exercises full professional responsibility for his/her findings, interpretations, decisions, recommendations and reports.

The incumbent is responsible for the administration, scoring and interpretation of a wide variety of psychological testing instruments and procedures, including objective instruments and procedures, intelligence and cognitive tests, neuropsychological assessment instruments, and inventories of interest, aptitude, criminality and achievement.

Along with all other correctional institution employees, incumbent is charged with responsibility for maintaining security of the institution. The staffs correctional responsibilities precede all others required by this position and are performed on a regular and recurring basis.

Basic Requirements:

Satisfactory completion of all the requirements for a doctoral degree (Ph.D. or equivalent) directly related to full professional work in clinical psychology is required.


In addition to the basic requirements, you must have:


There is no substitution of education for specialized experience for this position.


At least one year of specialized experience equivalent in difficulty and complexity to the next lower grade level. To be creditable, this experience must have equipped the applicant with the particular assessments to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically be in or related to the position to be filled.

Some examples of the qualifying experience are:

  • Experience in the assessment and treatment of sex offenders in a correctional setting.
  • Experience performing individual and group psychotherapy with sex offenders.
  • Experience with a wide variety of empirically based treatment modalities and techniques including behavior therapy, cognitive behavior therapy, crisis intervention, social skills training, motivational interviewing, and relapse prevention.
  • Experience with a wide variety of objective assessment instruments including intellectual, personality, sexual deviancy, and risk assessment
