Assistant Professor of Psychology

Central College’s department of Psychology is seeking applications for a tenure-track appointment at the Assistant Professor level beginning August 2020. The desired area of specialization is counseling or clinical psychology. Applicants should have a Ph.D. in psychology or a highly related field (ABD considered) and be committed to excellence and innovation in undergraduate education and collaborative undergraduate research within a liberal arts setting.

The ideal candidate will be responsible for teaching some combination of courses in their area(s) of expertise (e.g., Abnormal Psychology, Principles of Counseling, Tests and Assessment, Substance Abuse and Addiction) and the candidate will also be expected to contribute to teaching responsibilities shared by the entire department, specifically teaching one or more courses within our program’s research sequence (General Psychology, Introductory and Advanced Research Methods, Statistics) and supervising undergraduate capstone research projects, a graduation requirement for all psychology majors at Central College. Additionally, candidates will be expected to contribute to the advising and mentoring of students, program assessment, supervision of internships and service-learning, and engaging in scholarship and service that contributes to the institution and profession. While undergraduate teaching is the highest priority, all faculty at Central are also supported to pursue scholarly activities in publishing, research, and professional endeavors.

Central’s DEPARTMENT OF PSYCHOLOGY is comprised of four collegial and dynamic tenure-line faculty who are committed to liberal arts education and undergraduate research. The psychology major consists of topical elective classes within psychology’s various sub-disciplines (e.g., social, developmental, biological, mental health) and a core sequence of classes focused on foundational research skills (e.g., general psychology, research methods, statistics, research practicum). Within this research sequence, each psychology major at Central completes both a group research project and an individual capstone research project, both of which are presented by students annually at regional and national psychology conferences. As such, our psychology graduates are well prepared for graduate study and B.A.-level employment in a variety of areas. About one-third of Central’s psychology graduates continue into graduate school immediately while an additional third follow into graduate school after a period of work experience.
