Assistant Professor of Psychology

The Bates College Department of Psychology invites applications for an Assistant Professor position in clinical/counseling psychology or community psychology beginning August 2020. We seek a candidate who can offer courses and conduct research in areas that address pressing social issues or problems (e.g., immigration, environmental injustice, poverty, trauma, drug use and abuse, physical and mental health disparities) and resilience in the face of such problems. We are interested in attracting candidates who share our commitment to the recruitment, retention, and mentoring of students from a wide range of underrepresented and marginalized identities including those from diverse racial, ethnic, and LGBTQAIP backgrounds. In addition, we seek candidates who can bring interdisciplinary, intersectional, and social justice perspectives to their teaching and research. The successful candidate will have a strong commitment to undergraduate teaching (typically 4-5 courses/year including labs) and supervision of undergraduate research. The candidate will be expected to maintain an active research program as well as to teach foundation courses (e.g., abnormal psychology) and courses in their specialty area. A successful candidate may also teach introduction to psychology, statistics, community-based research methods, or courses that would complement curricula in the psychology department and ideally other departments and programs in the form of cross-listed courses. Ph.D. preferred, ABD will be considered.

The college’s mission statement celebrates “the transformative power of our differences.” Accordingly, we believe that campus diversity contributes to student learning, and we embrace our college’s aim to extend access to a Bates education to an ever wider range of students. Candidates who can enhance the diversity of the faculty and/or contribute to supporting an increasingly diverse student body are encouraged to apply. Review of applications will begin October 1st. Interested individuals should include a letter of application, their curriculum vitae, a statement of teaching philosophy, teaching evaluations (if available), a statement of program of research, and a statement of contributions in promoting diversity, equitable inclusion, and social justice. Applicants should also arrange for three letters of recommendation in the event that the search committee requests them. Employment is contingent on successful completion of a background check.
