Position Summary

The University of the Incarnate Word invites applications for the position of Assistant Director under the Counseling Center/Behavioral Health Services.


The Assistant Director of the Behavioral Health Counseling Center is responsible for assisting in creating and implementing the Center's vision and achieving Center's goals and in collaboration with the Director of Behavioral Health, administer day-to-day clinical operations of the Center. The Associate Director supervises graduate interns and provides leadership to Behavioral Health Counseling Center mental health promotion activities, including direct oversight of orientation activities, campus-wide suicide prevention and after hours on campus activities.


This leader will also be involved with individual, group, and couples/family counseling, crisis assessment / intervention, learning assessment and ADA related assessments for students enrolled at UIW or any of its affiliate Catholic School programs. This position will also provide information and referral services to employees of the UIW system as needed.

Description of Job Duties

  • Reports directly to the Director of Behavioral Health
  • Assists Director in administering day-to-day clinical and administrative operations of the Center Including oversight of workshop and education programs and assists in supervision of interns and professional staff
  • Assists Director in quality improvement initiatives; in preparation of annual reports and documents
  • Assists Director in development and evaluation of Counseling Center policies and procedures to guide efficient operations and excellent service to stakeholders
  • Provides oversight of Counseling Center Outreach and Programming, with emphasis on campus wide-suicide prevention education
  • Thrives in highly matrixed organizations
  • Models the way to meet timelines on all responsibilities
  • Consults with Director in situations regarding the safety of students at risk and communicates with staff and other departments including campus police, Student Success, and others
  • Provides oversight for counseling center data collection and analysis. Actively seeks grant opportunities and has grant writing experience
  • Responsibly represents the Center in interactions with administrators, faculty, staff, and committees including BIT
  • Provides direct clinical services, including crisis intervention and consultation with various university personnel to assist in resolution of concerns and situations of conflict
  • Provides outreach to university community on developmental needs of college-age students, mental health and wellness issues, and prevention
  • Participates in various UIW activities, committees, orientation, and networks while collaborating with other university schools and departments
  • Performs other related duties as assigned

  • Proven ability to plan, develop, and implement short and longer-term goals within designated timelines
  • Employee shall adhere to all applicable rules and regulations of the University, the Conference, and the NCAA
  • Ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse communities and cultures



Required Education

PhD in Counseling or related field.


Required Work Experience

  • Minimum of three years of administrative and supervisory experience, including intern supervision
  • Minimum of five years’ experience in a university counseling center or equivalent
  • Minimum of five years of professional clinical counseling experience.



Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience as a grant administrator
  • Bi-Lingual in Spanish



Required Certifications, Licenses or Registrations

  • Full, unrestricted LPC , LCSW , LMFT or Licensed Psychologist in the state of Texas
  • Must hold valid driver’s license and be able to drive to different UIW campuses as needed



Work Hours

Between 8am-5pm. Must be flexible to meet needs of UIW students. May require occasional weekend or evening work for special events.


Work is indoors, sedentary and is subject to changes and/or variable work hours.



Physical Demands

  • Visual acuity to read information from computer screens, forms and other printed materials and information
  • Able to speak clearly in conversation and general communication
  • Hearing ability for verbal communication/conversation/responses via telephone, telephone systems, and face-to-face interactions
  • Manual dexterity for typing, writing, standing and reaching, flexibility, body movement for bending, crouching, walking, kneeling and prolonged sitting
  • Lifting and moving objects and equipment up to 15 lbs
